We are Tania and Gaetano, two expats who moved our families to Spain for new adventures. We both moved here from the US, Tania (originally from the UK) in 2020, with her husband and daughter from Northern Virginia, and Gaetano in 2023 with his two daughters from Los Angeles. We all met in Valencia and got along incredibly well, but while we cracked each other up discussing our fun times adjusting to Spain, there were quite a few eye-rolls from our girls (tweens and teenagers anyone!). In an effort to give our daughters a little break we thought what the heck, let’s share our experiences with unsuspecting strangers instead. This podcast came to life and we hope you enjoy the pitfalls and joys of our experiences - we all have!
Tania and Gaetano are two spirited expats navigating the joys and jolts of life in Spain—and inviting you along for the ride. As co-hosts of Ah…Spain!, they share real, relatable, and often hilarious stories about raising kids, adapting to Spanish culture, and figuring it all out one tapa at a time.
Tania’s expat story began long before Spain. Born in the UK, she moved to Los Angeles in 1994 to study Communication Design at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After years in California's creative scene, she relocated to Washington D.C., where she built her graphic design business—and met her husband, originally from Morocco. Longing for the Mediterranean lifestyle and easy access to both Morocco and the UK, they finally made the leap to Valencia in 2020. With their daughter in tow, they traded in suburban U.S. life for paella, palm trees, and a fresh start on the Spanish coast.
Gaetano’s path to Spain was equally colorful. Born in Northwest Indiana, with childhood ties to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, he was always an entertainer at heart. He attended Columbia University in New York City and stayed for a decade before relocating to sunny Los Angeles to pursue acting and singing…and fatherhood. Along the way, he also helped others build their families through adoption and foster care. A nomad at heart, Gaetano had long dreamed of living abroad—but it wasn’t until a covid-era deep dive into relocation videos and articles that he realized life in Europe didn’t have to remain a fantasy. After 22 years in L.A., he packed up his daughters (and their cats) and made the leap to Valencia in 2023.
Fate (and a shared sense of humor) brought Tania and Gaetano together once they were both in Valencia, Spain. Their daughters hit it off right away. So did the parents—bonding over awkward translation mishaps, bureaucratic surprises, and those “what just happened?” moments only expats understand. After one too many laugh-out-loud chats (and a few dramatic tween eye-rolls), they decided to take their stories public.
Thus, Ah…Spain! was born—a podcast full of candid conversations, cultural observations, and the unfiltered ups and downs of starting over in a new country. It's the perfect companion for anyone dreaming of a life in Spain, already here, or just curious about what it’s really like.
