We are Tania and Gaetano, two expats who moved our families to Spain for new adventures. We both moved here from the US, Tania (originally from the UK) in 2020, with her husband and daughter from Northern Virginia, and Gaetano in 2023 with his two daughters from Los Angeles. We all met in Valencia and got along incredibly well, but while we cracked each other up discussing our fun times adjusting to Spain, there were quite a few eye-rolls from our girls (tweens and teenagers anyone!). In an effort to give our daughters a little break we thought what the heck, let’s share our experiences with unsuspecting strangers instead. This podcast came to life and we hope you enjoy the pitfalls and joys of our experiences - we all have!

Hello. Welcome to Ah, Spain, Poco Poco.
0:10
How are you, Tanya?
0:11
I'm doing very well. How are you?
0:14
I'm feeling spooky.
0:16
Oh, you are. You know, I love the the
0:21
holidays where we can decorate and dress
0:23
up and everything. And Halloween is one
0:24
of our favorites in this house. And I'm
0:28
not a huge fan of bats, which is what
0:30
we're talking about today. But I am now
0:32
much a much much much bigger fan of bats
0:34
now than I was before. I'm going to say
0:37
I agree. And I will say I don't like the
0:39
idea of bats, but I like the I like the
0:42
idea of like bat symbols and that, you
0:44
know, you know, I think
0:49
I love bat Halloween decorations. I
0:51
don't want a bat flying into my head
0:54
when I'm swimming in a pool at night,
0:56
you know? That's that was my childhood
0:57
fear. Don't swim in the pool at night.
0:59
The bats will get stuck in your hair.
1:01
But anyway,
1:01
it's so funny the stories that will
1:03
scare kids, right?
1:04
Well, and for anyone that hasn't been to
1:06
Valencia,
1:08
bats are huge here. I mean, they're on
1:12
everything. And initially, I was when I
1:14
when I first moved, I was like, what is
1:15
going on with this? It's not just one
1:18
thing. I mean, it's on everything,
1:20
right?
1:21
I agree. It took me a few months cuz I'm
1:24
very pretty like that. It took me a few
1:26
months to realize, oh, it's like part of
1:28
the symbol of the city. Like it's it's
1:30
part of the iconography of the city.
1:33
Okay.
1:34
Yeah. Absolutely. So, the reason for
1:36
that is, and we've talked, we talked a
1:38
little bit about this in the October 9th
1:40
episode, Poca Poco, that we did, and we
1:43
kind of glossed over the bats because we
1:44
knew we were going to want to do this
1:46
one, but we did say a little bit about
1:48
that when
1:49
So, now we can gloss over the history
1:51
really quick.
1:51
We can gloss over the history and go to
1:52
the bats. So the the unifying part here
1:56
is that when KingWami I of Aragon was
1:59
laying siege to Valencia in 1238,
2:03
there was an evening I suppose everyone
2:05
had gone to sleep and what was actually
2:07
happening while they were sleeping was
2:09
that the the Moors were about to do a
2:12
surprise attack on them and a bat
2:16
apparently got into like a tent and it
2:19
just started and I mean this is what we
2:21
have our fear about bats, right? They
2:23
get in the house and they just hit
2:24
everything. This is what was happening.
2:28
So, hitting drums, hitting weapons,
2:30
hitting everything. Probably the tent,
2:32
probably just making a whole lot of
2:34
noise and woke everybody up. And and
2:36
then obviously because of that, they
2:39
consider and obviously that then helped
2:41
them not to have the surprise attack and
2:43
and it is now considered a divine omen
2:46
of protection and good fortune,
2:48
right? So, it's not a bad luck thing in
2:50
Valencia. It's it's part of Valencia
2:52
pride. It's it's a it's a protecting
2:55
thing of the people, right? It's
2:56
a very very good thing. Absolutely.
2:58
It's part of your spiritual armor of the
3:01
city, right?
3:02
And it's on the coat of arms. It's the
3:05
local football team. It's on I mean it's
3:08
it's everywhere,
3:09
right?
3:11
It's on the Yes. The Yeah, it's
3:13
everywhere. And there's big hedge
3:15
sculptures in the gardens, too. I mean,
3:18
you can't escape it. Now, mind you, our
3:20
history might be wrong and many scholars
3:22
have different um how would you say
3:26
takes on history takes on the story, but
3:28
we're gonna go with the the woo woo
3:31
crazy stuff because I like that. I like
3:33
Plus, it's Halloween, so we're just
3:35
going to really jump into that with both
3:37
feet, I think.
3:38
Exactly.
3:39
There's always I mean, obviously, this
3:41
was a while ago, so there's going to be
3:42
different ideas of maybe what happened,
3:44
but we we love a good story.
3:46
We do. And speaking of good stories, can
3:48
we mention that a thing I love about
3:51
Valencia people is that there was a time
3:55
and I think it's come up repeatedly that
3:57
Valencia has been sued the city and I
4:00
think the and the football team has been
4:02
sued by like DC comics and stuff because
4:05
they're like that's close to our Batman
4:08
symbol and
4:09
Yeah. No, I think it's funny like 2014 I
4:12
think like a couple of times, right? in
4:14
and obviously we all know Batman.
4:16
But the great thing about this story is
4:19
that Valencia was just like, "We've been
4:21
doing this for hundreds of years. We
4:23
don't own the bat symbol." And I don't
4:26
know what happened, but it all kind of
4:28
went away. So
4:29
it fizzled, right? They're like just
4:30
kind of fizzled.
4:31
There's a big lawsuit and then we'll
4:33
just keep quiet.
4:34
Yeah. And I think what had happened in
4:36
that is that they had sort of started
4:38
redesigning and coming up with different
4:40
bats and designs for things and
4:42
obviously, you know, logo, you know, dis
4:45
disputes and all this type of thing. But
4:47
yep, Valencia's been doing bats for
4:49
longer. So there you have it.
4:51
I mean, and how many ways can you draw a
4:52
bat? You know what I mean? So
4:54
yeah,
4:56
apparently DC Comics would like there to
4:58
be more ways,
4:59
I think.
5:00
to draw a bat.
5:03
But in in all fairness, the the bat that
5:05
you have for the Valencian football team
5:09
and the one that's on on the coat of
5:11
arms and everything is very similar to
5:14
the Batman.
5:15
I guess I'm still going to say ours is
5:17
more original. Sorry, DC Comics.
5:19
Oh, no. Definitely original. I'm just
5:20
saying it already was the same as the
5:22
DC. Maybe maybe somebody from there had
5:24
visited Valencia in the past and was
5:26
like, "That's a cool." Yeah,
5:30
who knows? But what is crazy, so I did
5:33
not know about all this bat stuff until
5:36
I was like, why is there a hedge of a
5:38
bat in Valencia? Then I went to in the
5:40
in the park. I mean, and then I went
5:42
down a rabbit hole and then I found out
5:44
that there are like 24 different species
5:47
of bats in Valencia. So like if you have
5:50
bat fears and if you're like not
5:52
accustomed to them, I mean that's a lot.
5:54
And I'm just going to have to say that I
5:56
used to sleep. I used to blindly sleep
6:00
with my the windows that don't have
6:02
screens open at night for the fresh air.
6:05
Yeah. Those don't those don't stay
6:07
closed because these bats are like
6:09
roosting in the city, too. Like in
6:11
they're not just like Batman in a cave.
6:13
They're roosting in crevices and eaves
6:15
in the city as well as in forests. So,
6:17
I'm just
6:18
Yeah. Well, we have them out here. We
6:19
I've seen them at night when we've like
6:21
been out at the pool at night and you
6:23
suddenly see dark things like flying.
6:25
So, I was like, but I don't mind because
6:28
they're eating a lot of mosquitoes. But
6:31
I will say I will sleep with my windows
6:33
open and I've been fine. And I I don't
6:36
think they want to be inside our house.
6:38
I mean, I think that would be an
6:39
accident if that were to happen, but
6:41
obviously nobody wants to be in the
6:43
middle of that accident. I guess
6:44
I don't want to be in that I'm not
6:45
taking that accidental risk.
6:47
I can see where you're coming from. We
6:49
live out in the mountains and I do see
6:51
them, but I don't see so many that it
6:53
concerns me that they're like, you know,
6:56
going to be doing that. We could name a
6:58
few of the species that are like a few
7:01
of the names that are like most popular
7:03
around here, I guess, out of the 24,
7:05
which would be the pipril bat and the
7:07
serotene bat and the
7:09
doenton bat. Those would be three. And
7:13
then there's a couple that are actually
7:14
considered endangered, which is the long
7:16
fingered bat and the Mahaly horseshoe
7:19
bat, which are
7:20
so those are kind of probably the main
7:22
ones. So probably maybe we have one of
7:24
those flying around our house. I don't
7:26
know. But I'm happy to have them.
7:27
I'm sorry. And plus and what is that
7:28
five and 19 more and you have 19 other
7:31
species flying around your house, too.
7:32
Just
7:33
mind. I need them there because they eat
7:37
a lot of mosquitoes. And I will say I
7:40
will take more bats to get rid of more
7:42
mosquitoes because it says that one bat
7:44
can eat about a thousand like insects
7:48
per night. So I don't know if we have
7:50
more insects that they're kind of like h
7:52
no on the mosquitoes cuz they're too
7:53
small. I'm going to eat the moths. But
7:55
I will go for more bats if they'll eat
7:57
more mosquitoes. That's where I that's
7:58
where I'm at.
7:59
I have read that they will eat up to
8:01
twothirds of the population of
8:02
mosquitoes. I'm just asking um
8:05
Oh my god. What would it be like? What
8:06
would it be like without that? I don't
8:08
know if that twothirds is true, but I
8:10
have seen it on several on several
8:12
websites. But if they've eaten twothirds
8:14
and I'm still being eaten alive, I'd
8:16
hate to think what what what
8:19
bloated,
8:21
bitten mess I would be walking down the
8:22
streets, right?
8:24
Yeah. So, I'm now just loving bats
8:26
basically, and I want more of them
8:28
because I just can't even imagine what
8:30
that would be. And we do have some
8:33
really cool caves. We have friends that
8:35
love to go hiking and find caves out in
8:37
the middle of nowhere. That's kind of
8:39
seems to be a thing that they're looking
8:40
for. And so there's lots of great places
8:43
for bats to live and and breed around
8:45
the area, not just your little your
8:48
little whatever's going on in the city
8:49
that they're living in,
8:50
right? In in like our eaves and nooks
8:52
and crannies and probably like in under
8:54
the bridges in the park, maybe. I mean,
8:56
I don't know. They I mean, is that I
8:57
mean, now when I'm going to walk through
8:58
the park at night, I'm going to be
8:59
looking around for
9:00
so scared now. But we have we we live up
9:03
in the in the forested area and you know
9:06
I I think it's it's obviously it's
9:08
obviously a very nice area for bats to
9:10
live all around here. So we should be
9:12
thankful for them because Valencians
9:15
love them
9:16
and and they and they love them and
9:18
they're also protecting them, right?
9:20
There are I mean there are we said there
9:21
are some endangered species. So, there
9:23
are conservation programs and they're
9:25
trying to protect these caves and
9:27
forests, the the forests that aren't
9:28
protected, trying to protect more
9:30
forests and all of that stuff, you know.
9:32
And since it's Halloween and we're
9:34
talking bats, we should probably mention
9:35
that it is true that bats, some bats do
9:38
drink blood.
9:39
They do.
9:40
And that's what's scaring you at night,
9:42
isn't it? Really?
9:43
It's actually not that. It's not them
9:44
like biting me and drinking my blood and
9:46
then I turn into like, you know,
9:47
it's not.
9:48
No, it's that they have rabies and I'll
9:50
have to clean it up and touch it and
9:51
then I'm foaming at the mouth by noon
9:53
and then I my kids don't have a dad. So,
9:55
yeah, I go there.
9:56
Very dramatic.
9:59
There are three species worldwide that
10:01
are considered vampire bats and they
10:04
live in the Americas, not in Europe. So,
10:07
I think
10:08
Well, then how did that story come
10:09
about? How did Bram Stroker write that
10:11
little story? Did he go to South
10:13
America?
10:14
I don't know. But they would be feeding
10:16
on like cows and pigs and probably in
10:20
wild farming areas where they can do
10:22
that. So I don't know that we really
10:24
have to worry to be honest.
10:25
Okay. Well, I'm still closing my the
10:28
windows without screens get closed at
10:29
night. Sorry.
10:31
Maybe you just need to put something in
10:33
the window because you know they are
10:35
they are they don't want to fly into
10:37
something and they're very smart because
10:38
they have their their eolocation going.
10:41
So they will if you put something in
10:44
your window that isn't a screen but kind
10:45
of blocks the kind of area where they
10:46
would fly, they would probably not come
10:48
in.
10:49
Okay. Okay. We'll worry about that
10:51
later. And um
10:54
but you know what is kind of cool in
10:55
that in the Mediterranean which I had
10:57
touched upon earlier that they are
10:59
symbols of the luck and prosperity and
11:03
us probably I mean in England are they
11:06
do they begget fear like they do in the
11:08
Americas?
11:08
I think so. I think this is for for me
11:10
definitely the only place that I've
11:12
lived where bats are really loved like
11:15
universally as a as a as an animal and
11:18
as a thing. Not just as a I mean
11:21
obviously it's Halloween. We're going to
11:22
have bats hanging all over our house and
11:25
we're going to be dressed and doing all
11:27
these things. But I mean as far as like
11:29
a real thing where they are loved. This
11:31
is the definitely the first place that
11:33
I've lived. I think I've I've met people
11:35
that are that love bats because they
11:37
understand all these things about what
11:38
they eat and all the and all that, but
11:40
most people, you know, I didn't know
11:42
this much about bats before we started
11:43
this pock. So,
11:45
neither did I. And I would say the
11:46
people who I used to know who loved bats
11:48
were goths and now here it's it's just
11:50
the whole population's like, "No,
11:51
they're our saviors. It's why we're not
11:54
completely eaten alive by mosquitoes."
11:56
Yeah. And because of the bat being a
11:58
part of so many symbols of different
12:00
things around the Valencian community,
12:03
it's on t-shirts, it's it's on flags,
12:05
it's on things. So yeah, you're going to
12:07
see it everywhere. So
12:09
everywhere you go.
12:10
So it's so spooky.
12:14
Well, we have to go out and get some
12:16
more Halloween decorations. So I'm going
12:18
to procure some more bats for throwing
12:20
around the house, as it were.
12:23
Me, too.
12:25
Well, on that note, Tanya, I think we've
12:28
covered enough on bats that we know
12:30
about bats.
12:31
I think so. Yep. Time to get into
12:33
Halloween. Maybe dress my dog as a as a
12:35
bat with some bat wings and get on out
12:37
there.
12:39
There you go.
12:40
Happy trick-or-treating.
12:41
You too. Talk to you later.
12:43
Bye.
