We are Tania and Gaetano, two expats who moved our families to Spain for new adventures. We both moved here from the US, Tania (originally from the UK) in 2020, with her husband and daughter from Northern Virginia, and Gaetano in 2023 with his two daughters from Los Angeles. We all met in Valencia and got along incredibly well, but while we cracked each other up discussing our fun times adjusting to Spain, there were quite a few eye-rolls from our girls (tweens and teenagers anyone!). In an effort to give our daughters a little break we thought what the heck, let’s share our experiences with unsuspecting strangers instead. This podcast came to life and we hope you enjoy the pitfalls and joys of our experiences - we all have!

Welcome to a Spain. Poco a poco. Hola.
0:08
Hola Tanya. Today we're talking about
0:12
something very exciting.
0:13
Oh yes, we love lasas which means
0:18
which means everybody sales and
0:20
discounts. It means sales. It's all the
0:22
wonderful discounted products and we
0:26
love it.
0:26
It is a shopping. at the consumer's
0:28
dream right now in in Spain.
0:31
I do love a good deal.
0:33
I do too.
0:35
And what was excit what what is very
0:37
interesting which I did not realize
0:39
until we moved here and we moved here in
0:41
July and a couple years ago and it was
0:44
these red Rabbeas signs everywhere and
0:46
I'm like oh it's a sale. And then a
0:48
friend of mine who was from Spain had
0:50
told me he's like oh you're there during
0:51
rape house it's a big thing. And I
0:53
didn't really know that it was such a
0:54
big thing but it is.
0:56
Twice a year they have these big sales a
0:59
right after Christmas after three kings
1:00
day and then in in July. So it's like
1:03
January into February, July into August.
1:07
But these are government sanctioned sale
1:10
periods.
1:11
Yes. And it and it's everything
1:13
and it's a and it can be everything. And
1:15
I think these are particularly exciting
1:18
for places like Alcortlair and stuff
1:20
where they really I mean a lot of the
1:22
shops I mean that's somewhere where
1:24
stuff can be more expensive and
1:25
sometimes you can just get amazing
1:28
things in some of the more expensive
1:29
shops and we love that. So
1:32
we we do not
1:34
and and I mean I think people save up
1:36
for the year thinking well this TV is
1:38
going to go out. Well, they're not going
1:40
to go out and get a if they can hold
1:41
out, they'll wait till July to get the
1:43
TV versus March, right? You know, these
1:45
things are coming. So, absolutely people
1:46
plan out.
1:47
Yeah. I mean, I'm not saying people
1:48
should plan on when they move based
1:50
around the Rob House, but maybe you
1:52
should plan on moving based around the
1:54
house because if you're going to have to
1:55
buy a lot of stuff, hey, why not, right?
1:58
Why not? Exactly.
1:59
So, this it a brief history of how it
2:02
started. originated in the 1930s by
2:04
Pepin Fernandez and um it was
2:08
and he owned a a department store which
2:11
doesn't exist anymore but it was called
2:13
Galleria's Pratiatoss. Did I say that?
2:16
Pratos Pratos
2:18
which he had some financial well he I
2:20
think he was long gone but in by 1995 it
2:22
was absorbed into Elcourt. So now
2:24
Elport's the only department store we
2:26
have,
2:26
which makes sense because it, you know,
2:28
these kind of these kind of rabbas,
2:31
these kind of sales and discounts are
2:32
often started in big department stores
2:35
because that's those are the ones that
2:36
are doing it. But it obviously has
2:37
become just a a big thing for for
2:39
everybody. And by the 1940s, they
2:42
actually formalized a law um for these
2:45
two national sales seasons in January
2:47
and July. So now it is literally what
2:50
everybody does and it is recognized for
2:53
the economic benefits and now that you
2:56
have it, like you said, everybody knows
2:57
that these are the two times it's
2:59
happening. So get on board.
3:01
Get on board.
3:02
Save up, you know, get your deals then.
3:05
And and and just so you know, like in
3:09
2020, they did re they kind of lacked
3:12
the law allowing people to have sales at
3:14
other times as well. Yeah. So you can't
3:17
they don't just have sales at these
3:18
times, but these are the traditional
3:20
cultural sales that everyone's kind of
3:22
looking out for and waiting for.
3:24
Yeah.
3:24
Um
3:26
and you see the red ribeha signs
3:27
everywhere. We love it.
3:29
Absolutely. I mean it's definitely
3:32
something that they'll take all I mean
3:34
especially in some of the department
3:34
stores. They'll take all the clothes out
3:36
of the mannequins and just dress them in
3:38
red. I mean it's just that's what's
3:40
going on. We don't need to advertise
3:41
anything at this point other than the
3:42
fact that we're having a sale,
3:44
right?
3:46
Um, so we have there's like you might
3:48
find like 30% off then they might be
3:51
deeper discounts with still a good
3:53
collection of things and then you might
3:55
have Ultimas which is like 70% off and I
3:59
have found some really good deals. I
4:02
will say by accident I went shopping one
4:04
time I think in January in Elcourt and
4:07
Glles and found like some really good
4:09
shoes for for Zena at a ridiculously low
4:12
price and I was like oh this is
4:14
fantastic
4:15
and and like you were saying those sales
4:17
prices it they go on as the sales going
4:19
on. So at the beginning you're not
4:20
fighting the deals but if you could wait
4:22
out till the end that's when you're
4:24
getting like the 70 80% off. But um also
4:28
you know if you're one of those perfect
4:29
sizes your size is probably sold out.
4:31
But if you're of a if you're of an
4:33
original figure like me, then you can
4:36
hold out maybe an original the end of
4:37
the sale.
4:39
Yeah. So that you probably if you're a
4:41
regular size, your stuff might not even
4:43
be in the sales in the first place. So
4:44
there you go. Who knows?
4:47
Yeah. Well, I think a lot of people know
4:49
how to how to do the sales. So it's not
4:51
that different from other countries, I
4:53
don't think, as far as how it works, but
4:55
it is, you know, those kind. What I also
4:58
think is cool is because of this
4:59
government regulation, they have to be
5:02
truthful. Like they can't just say, "Oh,
5:04
this is 50% off." They have to prove
5:06
like if the government comes and
5:07
inspects, they want to see the sheet of
5:09
when what when was this priced? What was
5:11
the 100% price? You can't just say this
5:14
is a deal. Like it really has to be a um
5:17
a researchable deal, I guess, is what
5:19
I'm trying to say.
5:20
Absolutely. And I and I do think and you
5:22
know it's going to be like anywhere else
5:23
where some of the big department stores
5:25
will have more going on but I mean the
5:27
smaller shops will also have going on at
5:30
the same time but you know I think it's
5:33
it's harder for them they're still
5:35
trying to participate because you kind
5:37
of have to because otherwise no one's
5:38
going to be buying anything from you at
5:39
that time but they so it is really
5:42
everybody will do something at that time
5:44
I think like all the shops will have
5:46
something going on even if they can't
5:48
compete with like the whole shop you
5:49
know even the department stores. It's
5:51
not everything that's in there. It's you
5:53
have to go to the section that has the
5:54
Rabaha. So, it's not everything. Um, and
5:57
obviously the more the more flaws you
5:59
have, the more you have to put in there,
6:02
right?
6:04
But it's still a really good it's really
6:06
good time to just be aware that it's
6:08
coming up. So, like you were saying, you
6:10
know, a TV or things that might stay on
6:12
sale, wait until the Ultimas sort of
6:15
because that'll be then 70% off if
6:18
you're not too fussy on maybe the size
6:20
of the TV or how smart it is or
6:22
whatever, you know,
6:23
how smart it is.
6:26
Who knows what they put on sale. Another
6:27
thing that was surprising to me which we
6:30
don't have in the states is that
6:32
cosmetics go on sale and during this
6:34
time and Christmas time but like
6:36
perfumes they'll have perfumes 40 50%
6:38
off and in America fragrance does not go
6:40
on sale. It just does not happen. So
6:42
it's very interesting to come here and
6:44
you're like oh I can get a hundred 150
6:47
you know euro bottle of cologne for 70
6:49
bucks this time which is like crazy to
6:52
me. So, we we may have loaded up on some
6:54
phones and perfumes for me and the kids
6:57
during one of these things.
6:58
I will say that you know way more about
6:59
this than I do
7:02
and I would I would gander a guess that
7:05
the sales are not sort of I mean we we
7:08
don't live in Madrid and we're not I'm
7:09
not a big sales shopper. I don't think
7:11
it I think it's a very exciting time and
7:13
everybody shops and it's a bit crazy but
7:16
it's not like Black Friday crazy I don't
7:18
think and I haven't seen it but we might
7:19
get people telling us that it is in
7:20
Madrid or it is somewhere else maybe but
7:23
we haven't seen that kind of madness
7:25
going along with this it's um you know
7:28
it's a it's happening and people are
7:30
just shopping you know it's not like
7:33
it's not line up outside the shop and
7:35
for hours and you know the whole night
7:37
but it could be happening somewhere um
7:39
could be yeah it could I haven't seen it
7:41
either, but you never know.
7:42
You never know. You never know. Um, and
7:45
I would definitely go for some of the
7:48
shops that I love to to shop in already,
7:51
you know, and I and then for me, the
7:54
treat is places like Elcorting Glas
7:56
where I generally don't shop there
7:57
because it's in the city and it's also
8:00
generally more expensive than I want to
8:02
spend on regular things. So, you can get
8:04
some you can get some good deals on
8:05
things that you wouldn't normally buy,
8:06
which is what I do.
8:07
Yes.
8:08
Yeah. very much so. Yeah. Um and the
8:11
clothes I would not normally buy, you
8:13
know, you're like, "Oh, I can get I can
8:15
get something from this store at the H&M
8:17
price." That's kind of nice,
8:19
right? And especially when you have
8:20
kids, I think this is also an
8:22
exceptional thing because you, you know,
8:24
just if you can coordinate your clothes
8:26
shopping and shoe shopping to these
8:28
times of year, then you're going to be
8:30
better off as well. Um, and that's kind
8:33
of a sort of back to school stuff that
8:35
happens for the July one. you're you're
8:37
kind of in the back to school almost
8:38
section. So, what's going to happen in
8:40
some of these stores is especially the
8:42
ones that do back to school stuff,
8:43
they're they're getting rid of stuff and
8:45
then after that they'll bring in the
8:47
whole back to school stuff at regular
8:49
price. So, if you can get you're not
8:51
going to get your pens and pencils and
8:53
and paper and stuff, but if you can get
8:54
your back Yeah. Not the uniforms either,
8:56
but not all schools have uniforms. If
8:58
you can get clothes and shoes in the
9:00
sales, I mean, in July, you're almost
9:03
already back to school. Yeah, for sure.
9:06
Good timing. Well,
9:08
well,
9:08
I think that's it.
9:09
Should we make a date for next week to
9:11
go shopping?
9:12
I think we should. Well, no, we have to
9:14
wait until the ultimate ultimas. So,
9:17
Oh, okay. So, beginning of August. We
9:19
Well, last week of July, we have August.
9:21
Okay,
9:22
that's a date.
9:24
Sounds good.
9:25
All right.
9:25
I'll see you at Elcourt in a month.
9:27
See you in El Court in a month. That's
9:29
the end of Raas Poco Poco.
9:31
