We are Tania and Gaetano, two expats who moved our families to Spain for new adventures. We both moved here from the US, Tania (originally from the UK) in 2020, with her husband and daughter from Northern Virginia, and Gaetano in 2023 with his two daughters from Los Angeles.
We all met in Valencia and got along incredibly well, but while we cracked each other up discussing our fun times adjusting to Spain, there were quite a few eye-rolls from our girls (tweens and teenagers anyone!). In an effort to give our daughters a little break we thought what the heck, let’s share our experiences with unsuspecting strangers instead. This podcast came to life and we hope you enjoy the pitfalls and joys of our experiences - we all have!

Poco A Poco: Marzipan
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
In this Poco A Poco episode, we get a little nutty exploring Spain’s sweetest tradition — marzipan (mazapán). From Toledo’s convent kitchens to medieval legends born of famine, this almondy classic has quite the backstory. We unwrap its Moorish roots, monastic magic, and why Toledo still reigns as the capital of Spanish marzipan today. From tiny sweets to eel-shaped creations, marzipan comes in many forms — and we’ve got the tales (and laughs) to match. Expect our signature mix of humor and history, sprinkled with just the right amount of sugar.

The No Agenda Episode
Tuesday Oct 28, 2025
Tuesday Oct 28, 2025
This week on Ah Spain Podcast, we go unscripted and embrace pure, glorious chaos — because who needs an agenda anyway? From the oddities of getting your child’s vaccines to trying to decode how to apply to colleges in the EU (pro tip: every country is different), we’re keeping it real and just a bit unhinged. Add in a never-ending pool cleaning saga, our unfulfilled spa day dreams, and a proud dad moment thanks to the Duke of Edinburgh program, and you’ve got yourself a proper tapas plate of topics. Oh, and we might get a little too passionate about the magic of sliced pork loin in the deli section. Tune in for laughs, relatable rants, and the beautifully unpredictable adventure of expat life in Spain.

Poco A Poco: Bats Of Valencia
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Bats, football, and royal legends — oh my! In this Poco a Poco episode, we flutter through Valencia’s skies to uncover why bats are beloved symbols, not spooky creatures. From King Jaume I’s lucky omen to Valencia CF’s epic logo feud with Batman (sorry, Gotham), these winged wonders have quite the backstory. We’ll also peek at the real bats that call the city and countryside home — the unsung heroes keeping mosquitoes at bay. It might be Halloween season, but in Valencia, bats are all about good fortune, not fright.

How We Celebrate Halloween
Tuesday Oct 21, 2025
Tuesday Oct 21, 2025
Boo! It’s Halloween time — and whether you live in Spain or are just curious how your Halloween traditions translate here, we’ve got the spooky spirit for you. From ancient customs like All Saint’s Day to modern-day trick-or-treating in Valencia’s Ruzafa neighborhood, we uncover how Spain’s ghosts, ghouls, and party-lovers celebrate October 31st their own way. Expect stories of haunted tunnels, lifesize skeletons, and costume chaos courtesy of expats and locals alike. We even dish on the big theme park scares — think PortAventura parades and Parque Warner’s all-night fright fest. Whether you’re into marzipan bones or midnight monsters, this episode proves that Halloween in Spain is muy divertido… and just a little bit wicked.

Poco A Poco: Camino De Santiago
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
Lace up those hiking boots — this week, we’re walking very slowly across Spain. In this Poco a Poco episode, we trace the legendary Camino de Santiago — from ancient miracles and royal pilgrims to today’s mix of blisters, bonding, and “¡Buen Camino!” camaraderie. Once a sacred journey to the tomb of Saint James, it’s now part spiritual quest, part cultural adventure, and part endurance test (with plenty of stamp collecting along the way). We explore why the scallop shell is the sign you’re on the right path — and what inspires hundreds of thousands of journey-seekers to hit the trail each year. Whether you’re walking for faith, fitness, or just for fun, the Camino always finds a way to change you, poco a poco.

Poco A Poco: October 9th
Thursday Oct 09, 2025
Thursday Oct 09, 2025
Few holidays combine history, fireworks, civic pride, sweets, and romance quite like October 9th in Valencia. Known both as Día de la Comunitat Valenciana—the city’s founding day—and Sant Dionís, Valencia’s very own Lovers’ Day, it’s a celebration that blends freedom and love in true Mediterranean style. In this episode of Ah Spain Podcast: Poco A Poco, we explore the story of King Jaume I and the conquest of Valencia, the city’s unique symbols like the bat and the Senyera flag, and the sweet tradition of the mocadorà—handkerchiefs filled with marzipan treats. You’ll also hear about fireworks, parades, and the local festivities that bring the city to life each October. Whether you’re a history buff, a hopeless romantic, or simply curious about Spanish traditions, this is Valencia at its most colorful and heartfelt.
